Key Terminology

Vertical Integration - Vertical Intergration is when a company is in supply chain and are all owned by one major conglomerate, for example New Line Cinema and Warner Bros are all owned by Time Warner

Horizontal Integration - This contrasts to vertical intergration, this is where everyone has an equal share in the company, and therefore can reach a wider market.

Hypothermic Needle - The Hypothermic Needle Theory was created in world war two, it's a theory that the audience are being theoretically injected with influences and idea by the media.

Mise-en-Scene - Mise-en-Scene is split into five groups
  1. Props
  2. Set
  3. Performance
  4. Costume
  5. Lighting

This is what the director must think of whilst on the set, and if done correctly can manipulate the audiences emotions to how the director intended them to, and also helps analysing take a deeper look into film.

Platform Release - Platform release is when a film (usually independent) gets released in a few cinema's, and if it becomes sucessful it will show in more and more cinemas, an example of this is little miss sunshine.

Saturated Release - Saturated release is when a film gets put on many screens, and usually goes along with aggressive marketing.

Aggressive/ Passive Marketing: Aggressive marketing is where the markets have put up adverts everywhere, and you little cant escape this one product. Passive is where the the marketers let it become an underground film by only releasing the trailer in certain areas.

Certificates

If a film is given a U certificate that means it is suitable for all ages. Usually given to children's films

PG, meaning Parental guidence. Means there will be more adult themes that might be distressing to a very young audience.

Tweleve rating means that the no one under the age of tweleve is allowed to see the film. However due to popular demand it was changed to a tweleve A on the release of 'Spider Man' (2001) which means people under the age of tweleve can see the film only with the supervision of an adult.

If a film is given and 15 certificate then no one under the age of fifteen is allowed to see the film, this can be due to references to drugs, sex, violence and strong language.

An 18 certificate means no one under the age of 18 can go and see this film, this could be due to strong language, strong violence, strong sexual scenes or scenes that viewers might find offencesive

Copyright Laws

Copyright laws are set of exclusice rights granted to the creator of original work, including the right to copy, distribute and adapt the work. These right can be licensed, transferred and/or assigned. Copyright last for a certain time period after which the work is said to enter the public domain.

Copyright as a property law was initially conceived of as a "chose in action", that is an intangible property, as opposed to tangible property. Tangible property is attached to the legal ownership of a physical item, hence the purchase of a book buys ownership of the book, but not the underlying copyright in the book's content.

Whilst using music in my media teaser trailer. I will have to obey these rules by giving credit to the original creator.

Predetermined Audiences

Predetermined audience is when a film sucess is based on a fan base that has started before the film has began production.

This is usually due to the film being based on:
  • A Book
  • A Video Game
  • An Original Film
  • An Era of time
  • An Auteur/Writer

I good example of this would be the Stephenie Meyer Saga 'Twilight' which has become a huge over night sucess due to the big hype from the pre-determined audiences.

Predetermined audiences help marketing and advertising by giving them an idea of what their target audience is and how they can aim it at people who have never heard of the original concept.

Cross Media Advertising

Cross Media advertising is commonly used in the media industry, it's an effective way for products of all kinds to get decent advetisement that will reach all kinds of audiences.

The best example of cross media advertisement would be Viral Campaign. Where the produces of a movie would set up their own website for people who are interested in the teaser to find out more information on there website.

The film 'untraceable', a film about a website, the more people who log into the website www.killwithme.com the faster his victims die. The link i have posted takes you to that exact fictional website where you are the protagonist, and have to solve a bunch of clues in order to shut down the website.

Interactive games is just one of the cross media advertising, we also have:
• Magazine covers
• Radio Shows
• Youtube accounts
• iTunes rentals.
• Mobile phones
Cross-media advertising has become the next big thing as it reaches more people than regular advertising.
