Evaluation - How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?

Above is the similarities between the two ancillary. Below are the four similarities between the three products, in order for my audience to recognise it clearly.

In my audience feedback people commented on how they would see it because it is up for awards. So i made sure that it was put in on my ancillary products. For my magazine i had a proffesional critic Rogert Ebert state that it's 'the best film of the 21st century'. For my media poster i had in big, bold, red letters that it is the winner of 3 cannes awards, a very prestigous awards that is usually given to a more indipendent film. Also in my trailer i added it in there as a subtitle.

Star quality is a brilliant way to get in a pre-determined audience. As the audience members would pay to see the latest star in the new film. Hence why my actress Rachel Redpath is used in my magazine cover aswell, so people will pick it up and therefore get more publicity for the film.

In most drama films, there is iconography that audience members always associate, like the rose petals in American Beauty (1999, Sam Mendez). An envelop is used throughout all products to make sure that the audience is able to recognise the film, where ever they were to go. But becasue i used it in both my ancillary it was important that a shot of the letters were dominant in the trailer

I also added a faux website in order for my audience to check out more on the teaser, because this teaser trailer was left really ambigous so i felt the need to do so. Also there is more star quality here as i put the cast list, just incase people see anyone there who they didn't see in the trailer.

Evaluations - What have you learned from your audience feedback?

I did surveys on the facebook social networking site, where I uploaded my ancillary products, and asked people to write their opinions about my work, asking them to rate the product on a scale from 1-10, and state where you would see the product based on the poster. These are the results:

All of the comments on the poster were positive with an average score of 8, people definitely were interested in seeing my product which means that my poster that I made was effective and was able to grab people’s attention and make them want to see the film.

‘This design makes you want to know what the poster is about’ – Katie Hayward

The initial idea of this poster was to make people be intrigued by what the letter actually is, as it’s supposed to be ambiguous and wanting people to see more.

I also put up a link of my trailer from YouTube onto my facebook account and asked people to comment on it, here is the response:

'it needed alot moe shots i think to give it more variety' - Rachel Redpath

As shown in my pre-production work, i had alot more shots planned out, but unfortunetly i was let down by an actor Simon Hall, he didn't show up on the day of filming and therefore i was stuck for actors, therefore i had to make do with the actors i had.

However, after that critism my teaser trailer was definitely effective as told from my audience feedback. They said numerous good things about it and the feedback was overall positive. They all seemed to like the lack of music at the start, one person states that

‘I really like the introduction of the music into the teaser Trailer’ – Emma Green

Because the music was used in a subversive way, by having no music or sound at the start it engaged my audience and was suspenseful, which immediately grabbed my audience’s reaction.

‘Yea, look alright, three Cannes awards, pretty impressive’ – Craig Mills

Although this was supposed to have been taken in jest, it raises a good point. A trick that I used was to make up that the film had won many awards, which usually brings in a audience when there is an award buzz around any film, people find a new interest in the film.

‘…also the fades are typical of the genre to show good use of editing…’ – Rachel Redpath

Drama teaser trailers usually use a fade to colour transition in there teaser trailers, to give a softer touch the editing, instead of having a sharp cut. This also showed my editing skills and how I was able to comply with the genre with the minor details.

‘The only thing I’d say is, at the beginning the match cut could have flowed better?’ – Matthew Sparkes

The match cut at the start was supposed to make the audience confused and give them time to soak in what’s happened, because James’ death is suggested and not shown fully, the audience may get too confused whilst watching it and therefore could lose interest, although no one has expressed this in my audience feedback.

In order to make my work coherent then i made a bar chart so you can clearly see the rating:

To make sure that the reviews I were getting were valid I did two video interviews, one to my target audience -25-40 and one to someone who is outside my target audience.

GENDER: female
AGE: 40

GENDER: Female
AGE: 10

This shows that my trailer appeals to my target audience of females between the age of 25-40, they found the teaser trailer to be well made and would like to see it at the cinema, however for a younger audience they would find the film to boring and would not be interested in seeing it at the cinema.

Evaluation - How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Evaluation - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

As shown in the teaser trailer, I paid close attention to the mise-en-scene and the codes and conventions of my chosen genre, which is a drama. My use of strong female characters taking control of the situation, this is represented in by the character of Angela, she is incredibly head strong and cynic about the letter that she has received. However she is a stereotypical character and her character arc is stereotypical as well, mainly these independent strong women usually meet there demise or comeuppance, like Kate Winslet’s Character in The Reader (2008, Stephen Daldry) she is very independent woman and ends up getting herself into a life sentence in jail. However the characters that comply to social conformity end up becoming richer from the experience.

The distribution company as big as Miramax pictures have so much experience with drama pictures.
• The Piano (1993, Jane Campion)
• Muriel’s wedding (1994, P.J Hogan)
• Good will hunting’s (1997, Gus Van Sant)
• Chocolat (2000, Lasse Hallstrom)
• Amélie (2000, Jean-Pierre Jeunet)
• Doubt (2008, John Patrick Shaunly)
• Chéri (2009, Stephen Frears)
After looking carefully at the type of films that Miramax have produced it’ll be the same as my film as they’re in the same genre.

The mise-en-scene I used for most my scenes were carefully picked to create an emotionally effective scene. I chose locations in the home or places that are naturally comforting to be around, to therefore make the audience more tense to see a really bad argument happen in a place that is familiar and warm. This follows the same technique as Sam Mendez, who exploits the ‘American Dream’ by manipulating American suburban life. Another aspect of mise-en-scene I looked at closely the lighting and made sure that most of my scenes where brightly lit, especially the first scene where Angela see’s James, I made sure it was set in the daylight to lull the audience into a false sense of security into thinking that everything will be okay until they see the dead corpse on the bed. Another technique with lighting I used was coloured lighting, I used a yellow filter over the lighting in the scenes with Lucy, to make the room seem dirtier and darker, this is so the audience can grasps a better understanding of Lucy’s torment and distress. Another part of mise-en-scene that I looked at was the performance, drama genre is renowned for having substantial & award winning actors, so I made sure all my actors that I cast were from the performance courses at my college, and therefore they are able to create believe characters who are able to portray very complex emotions.

How i treat my actors

To ensure my cast and crew were happy whilst working for me, I had to ensure that they had everything they needed. Because the shoot was long and stretched out for the whole day, I had to make sure that they had food and in the middle of the day, so I bough snacks and paid for a fish and chip lunch. I also made sure that they had a half an hour break, shown in the picture above where I gave them magazines, laptop and the company of each other to just sit back and relax for a while. I did this to keep worker fatigue up and to ensure that they were able to work to the best of their ability.
